100 years of Châteauneuf! Ask for the program!

100 ans de syndicalisme viticole de Châteauneuf du Pape

The Syndicat des Propriétaires Viticulteurs de Châteauneuf-du-Pape was created on October 4, 1923 to fight against fraudsters who were usurping the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of origin. Baron Pierre le Roy de Boiseaumarié was its first president.

Some time earlier, a delegation of winegrowers led by Emile Armenier, mayor of the commune, and Paul Avril, president of the agricultural syndicate, had visited Château Fortia to ask for the help of this jurist who had become a winegrower after serving as a fighter pilot during the First World War.

In 2023, the winegrowers' union intends to celebrate the centenary of its creation by organizing various events to pay tribute to the work of its founding fathers. In 1935, this work led to the creation of the "Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée" (AOC), an unprecedented concept whose power to promote and protect agricultural and artisanal products can now be measured on a worldwide scale. Products whose intrinsic qualities are linked to their geographical origin, as well as to respect for "local, fair and constant practices" that have become established over time.
